English Ancestors of the
Thomas Dollin Family in Australia

The Amor Family

Mary Ann Amor married Thomas Dollin before they immigrated to Australia in 1857 on the 'Herefordshire'. According to the shipping record, Mary Ann Amor was the daughter of Thomas and Caroline living at Chard and Mary Ann was listed as 23-24 years old.

We have been able to trace the family of Mary Ann Amor in Chard through the 1841, 1851 and 1871 UK census records.

In all three census records, Thomas Amor was an agricultural labourer.

The following table shows the ages of the father, mother and children in each census record:

Mary Amor's Mother: Catherine or Caroline?

-- The Parish Registers for Chard record the baptism of a Catherine Kooch on 25 September 1803.

-- The Parish Registers for Chard record a marriage between Thomas Amor and Catherine Keetch on 23 May 1823.

-- The Parish Registers for Chard also record baptisms of ten children born to Thomas Amor between 1824 and 1849: Richard, John, Joseph, Mary Ann, Henry, Isaac, Elizabeth, Sarah Jane, William Thomas and James. In the first nine records the mother's name is given as 'Catherine' or 'Catharine' whilst in the tenth record, she is given as 'Kitty'.

-- According to the UK Civil Registers of Births, Marriages and Deaths, the death of a Catherine Amor aged 71 was registered in Chard in March 1875.

-- However, although Thomas Amor's wife was listed as Catherine in the 1841 census record, she was listed as Caroline in 1851 and 1871.

-- Furthermore, on the 1857 shipping record of the 'Herefordshire', Mary Ann's parents were listed 'Thomas and Caroline living at Chard'.

A possible explanation of this is that Mary Ann's mother's name was Catherine but in later years she preferred to be called 'Caroline'.

Interestingly Mary Ann Amor named her first son Henry Isaac and her first daughter, Caroline Amor. Perhaps these children were named after Mary Ann's brothers and mother.
