Robert Henry Dollin in England

Robert Henry Dollin
b 1854, d 1936 or 1938

Warmest thanks to family descendants, Betty Morgan and her son Jonathan, who have given us valuable additional information this family line!

Born in St Nicholas, Bristol, England. Son of Robert Dollin and Ann Burgess.

Married Mary Ann Caddick in 1878. Mary Ann was born in Wales on 16 April 1856. Mary Ann was the daughter of James Caddick (b 1834, d 1891, Bristol) and Ann Elizabeth Shepherd (b 1836 in Somerset, d 1895 in Bristol).

Robert Henry Dollin was a seaman. The family lived in Bedminster, Bristol.

Robert's granddaughter, Betty Morgan, said Robert was a small man with a beard. She can remember him rowing her along a river in Bristol. She said that Robert was a very kind man who always gave money to children who greeted him in the street. Someone who knew Robert later told Betty what a kind and generous fellow her grandfather had been!

One of Robert Henry Dollin's sons, Frederick Dollin, died of food poisoning at the age of three. An article in The Bristol Mercury and Daily Post on 23 August 1890 described the inquest into his death:

'Also at the Hospital, on the body of Frederick Dollin aged three years, who died from the effect of eating mussels for supper on Wednesday evening. Robert Dollin, the father of the child, of Hazell's buildings, Stillhouse lane, said he was away from Bristol when the event occurred. Ann Dollin deposed that she was the grandmother of the little boy and lived at 3, St John's buildings, Bedminster.

Deceased ate some mussels for supper on Wednesday evening, as did her husband. Between twelve and one the child became restless, and her husband also became so ill that they were both taken to the Hospital, where the child died shortly after being admitted, but her husband was getting better. Her husband obtained the mussels from a vessel which brought them from Avonmouth; he got them in the morning, and they were cooked in the evening.

Dr Gray, physician's assistant at the Hospital, gave evidence to the effect that he saw the patients on Wednesday night. They appeared to be suffering from some form of poison. The child died about 1.50 on Thursday morning. It was apparently a healthy, well nourished child. He should ascribe death to acute inflammation of the stomach and intestines, produced by some irritant poison in the mussels. He considered that mussels would be come poisonous if kept for any length of time.

The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence. The deceased's father suggested that the practice of gathering mussels, which were clinging to the walls of the docks at Avonmouth, was very dangerous, as they became contaminated with all sorts of refuse which was washed up with the tide. The Coroner entirely agreed with this, and intimated his intention of communicating with the authorities there with a view to some warning being issued on the subject.'

There is a record in the UK BMD of a Robert H Dollin who died in 1938 aged 84 in Bristol. Mary Ann Dollin nee Caddick died in 1931 in Bristol aged 75.

Robert Henry Dollin
b 1879

Born in Bedminster. Son of Robert Henry Dollin and Mary Ann Caddick.

Robert Henry Dollin married Florence Ada Woolf in Bristol in 1905.

Family member, Betty Morgan, told us the tragic story of this family. Florence Ada Dollin caught the Spanish Flu and died in 1918 only two weeks after the birth of Frederick H Dollin. Then Florence's husband, Robert Dollin, died two weeks later of the same illness. This left their young family of Bob (aged 10), Ada (aged 8), May (aged 4) and baby, Frederick, as orphans.

The authorities wanted to put the children in the workhouse. However, Robert's sister, Lillian, was horrified. Lillian kindly took on the care of May and arranged for Bob and Ada to be cared for by other family members. Sadly baby Frederick died as an infant.

May, a much loved family member, passed away in her 30s from a severe illness, leaving two young children.

Edgar Dollin
b 1884, d 1947

Born in Bedminster. Son of Robert Henry Dollin and Mary Ann Caddick.

Edgar Dollin apparently married twice. His first wife was probably Mary A Reed (married in 1910 in Bristol). An Edgar and Mary Ann Dollin, both aged 25, were living in Bedminster, Bristol, at the time of the 1911 UK Census. They had been married for one year and had no children. This Edgar Dollin was a slaughter man. Betty Morgan, a family descendant, told us that Edgar's wife was called 'Aunt Poll'.

Edgar Dollin's second wife was Emma Winstone.
