Henry Dollin Family in Australia

Henry Dollin
baptised 9 Nov 1828; d 29 Dec 1904

Born in Dunster, Somerset, England. Son of John Dollin and Mary Ann Gould. Brother of Thomas Dollin.

Married Sarah Widlake on 31 Jan 1852 in Dunster, Somerset, England. However, their marriage was registered in Williton in the UK Births, Marriages and Deaths register. Sarah was baptised in Dunster, Somerset, on 26 Jan 1823. She was the daughter of William and Joan Widlake.

In the Dunster baptism registers, Henry’s occupation was recorded as a labourer in 1854.

Henry and Sarah Dollin came to Australia on the ‘Gloriana’ in 1855 with a son, William, aged 6, departing from the Port of London. Their passage was assisted by the Crown. They arrived in Australia on 27 Jul 1855, two years before Henry's brother, Thomas Dollin.

The list of assisted immigrants for the 'Gloriana' states that Henry was an agricultural labourer aged 26 and Sarah was his wife aged 32. Henry's parents were listed as 'John and Mary living in Dunster ' and Sarah's parents were 'William and Johann Wedley, mother living, father dead'. Neither had relatives in the colony at that time.

They probably settled 25km north of Raymond Terrace on rich farmland on the William River at Clarence Town, NSW. When Henry's brother, Thomas, arrived on the 'Herefordshire' in 1857, the shipping record notes that Thomas had a brother, Henry, at Clarence Town. Henry Dollin is also listed as a farmer at Russell Field, Clarence Town in the 1872 Greville Post Office Directory.

The evidence now suggests that three Dollin brothers may have come to Australia in the 1850s:
-- Henry Dollin - July 1855
-- Thomas Dollin - May 1857 and
-- William Dollin - Aug 1858

Henry Dollin died in Tingha, near Glen Innes, NSW in 1904 aged 76 and was buried in the Church of England Cemetery, Tingha. On Henry Dollin's death certificate it states that he was a carrier.

Sarah Dollin (nee Widlake) died on 11 Nov 1885 and was buried in the Tingha cemetery, NSW (sec 9, row 7/24). According to the NSW Births, Marriages and Deaths register, Sarah was the daughter of William and died in Bundarra near Tamworth.
